Background Information

At the Village, children of all ages learn effective personal safety strategies and how to respond to dangerous or threatening situations. The Children’s Safety Village has been the host site for the training of 1,000 school Safety Patrollers each year.

Our Beginning

The Kiwanis Club of Brantford, Ontario, pioneered the idea for The Children’s Safety Village of Brant in 1998. No other community of our size had previously established a Safety Village that would uniquely include servicing children who live in rural areas. As a result, our goal became to educate students in Brantford, Brant county and Six Nations.

We were proud to have Walter Gretzky as the Honourary Chair of the Children’s Safety Village. His support and belief in the project helped to propel a community need into a reality! A generous initial start up fund of $25 000.00, and thousands of volunteer hours, was donated to the project by The Kiwanis Club of Brantford. The Kiwanis Clubs of Grand River and Paris-Brant and many community minded businesses, foundations and donors were also strong supporters of this project, helping The Children’s Safety Village of Brant reach its 1.5 million dollar goal to becoming a reality.

Programming Design

Hallowe’en in the Village

Programming was developed and an instructional plan was created by the best in our community! Our founding board worked cooperatively with the Brantford Police Services, Brant County OPP and Six Nations Police, Brantford Fire Department, Brant County Fire Department, Six Nations Fire Department, the Grand Erie District School Board, the Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board, Six Nations, Mohawk College and Health unit officials.

In September 2005 the Children’s Safety Village of Brant officially opened it’s doors to students. Programmes are offered to students from K to 8. We provide a unique environment where interactive, hands-on learning can take place to ensure retention which is essential in emergency situations!

In the 2 years prior to the pandemic, over 13,000 children completed our life-saving safety programmes. Topics are age appropriate and include: personal safety, fire safety, bicycle safety, science of fire, internet safety, when you’re in charge of fire safety (kids home alone or babysitters) and social media safety. All our programs are taught by professional fire fighters and police with the support of volunteers.

Sustainability

The Children’s Safety Village is a registered charity and receives no government funding. The Village was built through the generosity of the community and continues to rely on the community to continue. We must fundraise over $120,000 to meet our annual budget.

Please consider becoming a volunteer or designating the Children’s Safety Village as your charity of choice.
